Man remanded over Colchester BlackBerry message

08:22 |

A man has been remanded in custody over messages sent via BlackBerry Messenger allegedly aimed at inciting a riot during the widespread England disorder.

Tommy Tucker, 20, of Colchester, Essex, is accused of encouraging the commission of an indictable offence.

Colchester Magistrates' Court was told police intercepted two messages between 7 and 10 August.

Mr Tucker did not enter a plea and was remanded to appear before Chelmsford Crown Court on 7 November.

The first message is alleged to have said: "Anyone want to start a riot in Colchester? 100pc serious."

A later message allegedly read: "Apple shop in town is on fire - Colchester has started."

Police had originally said his offences were linked to an attempt to start a water fight.

The force now says it was a different person who encouraged the water fight and that suspect has now been released without charge.
